Encourage safe access to education for children who are outside the formal system as a consequence of the armed conflict and create an environment of protection.

Violent attacks against civilians perpetrated by Boko Haram (BH) have devastated northeastern Nigeria. United Nations agencies and human rights organizations have reported indiscriminate killings, rapes and sexual abuse of girls and women in camps for displaced persons, kidnappings, forced marriages and recruitment of children, many of them used in suicide attacks, others as child soldiers. People affected by violence urgently need humanitarian assistance to save lifes.

For children and young people affected by crises, education is a key factor in saving lifes. The schools provide an environment of stability, security and a fundamental routine for the management of the traumas caused by armed conflicts. Schools are essential in protecting children against the dangers that surround them, including abuse, exploitation, gender violence and recruitment by armed groups. The teaching staff becomes a key protection reference. The school environment is also essential to provide another type of assistance to save lifes, such as water and sanitation, food aid and health.

Plan International wants to promote safe access to education for children, boys and girls in the states of Borno and Adamawa, two of the regions most affected by the conflict. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to increase the number of children and young people reintegrated into the formal education system, since they are currently outside it as a consequence of the conflict; improve the provision of quality education; and increase the number of safe learning spaces.

• Establish 30 temporary learning spaces and acquire the appropriate materials and equipment.
• Provide didactic kits in each learning space, including white boards and other essential teaching equipment. Teachers will be trained in the use, handling and storage of these kits.
• Provide 35 kits of recreational activities, linked to the psychosocial well-being of minors, to support the creation of friendly learning spaces. Teachers and volunteers will be trained in their use.

With your help, 306 children from two of the regions most affected by the armed conflict with Boko Haram, Borno and Adamawa, will be able to access the school, which in turn will allow them to have a space of protection.
