Despite WHO's efforts to combat blindness, cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness in sub-Saharan African countries, with more than 16,000 new cases per year. The high cost of an ophthalmological intervention in safe health conditions is € 180, unattainable price for the majority of the population of Burkina, who does not live, but survives day by day and who, with great difficulties, earn € 30 per month.

Cataracts treatment in Burkina Faso
Campaign objectives

To provide ophthalmologic treatment to people from Burkina Faso.

Description

Despite WHO's efforts to combat blindness, cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness in sub-Saharan African countries, with more than 16,000 new cases per year. The high cost of an ophthalmological intervention in safe health conditions is € 180, unattainable price for the majority of the population of Burkina, who does not live, but survives day by day and who, with great difficulties, earn € 30 per month.

To fight blindess, Amigos de Rimkieta Foundation (FAR) organized an ophthalmologic expedition in 2013 with the Barraquer Foundation, and NGO dedicated to providing comprehensive eye care to patients worldwide. 1.000 people were attended, 140 cataracts diagnosed, and 153 eyeglasses prescribed, which were provided at a social price.

Every year, FAR develops the “Ophthalmological interventions” project to treat cataracts. With your help, 36 patients could see again.

  • Treat cataracts and give support to patients during the surgery, before and after the intervention.
